Chiruca® continues with its commitment to the environment and continues with the planting of the Chiruca Forest, which is located in the Riojan municipality of Bergasa. A reforestation project that the Riojan brand has been carrying out since 2015.
From the initial figures of 6 hectares and 6,000 trees, the reforestation has continued over the years and has now reached the figure of 24,000 trees planted and 23 hectares in total.
In 2023, a further 10,550 trees have been planted, of which 6,470 are replacement trees and 4,080 new ones. In the words of Chiruca’s Quality and Environment Manager, Jorge Orío, the person coordinating the planting, « we are currently faced with the added complexity of an increasingly hot climate, with the difficulty that this entails for the survival of the seedlings. This increases the number of replacements, and we have to replant previous plantations in order to maintain the number of units planted ».
On this occasion, birch, holm oak, strawberry tree, blackthorn, blackthorn, wild apple, gall oak, wild cherry, rowan, maple, hackberry, aladierna and cornicabra species have been planted; a wide variety that will help the biodiversity of the land.
Jorge Orío also points out that « the carbon footprint of an organisation tells us the impact of its production process on the greenhouse effect, by measuring the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere ». One way of sequestering carbon dioxide is through its transformation into biomass by plants. Our commitment to absorb 100% of our carbon dioxide emissions is carried out by planting trees that compensate for the CO2 emitted in the boot manufacturing process ».
With this forest, Calzados FAL – Chiruca aims to compensate for the CO2 emissions derived from their manufacturing process and which are part of their « Chiruca Forest Absorption » project registered with the MAGRAMA to calculate, reduce and compensate for greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to environmental sustainability, highlighting the importance of the Carbon Footprint in the business world and Calzados Fal’s commitment to the environment.
The commitment of Calzados Fal – Chiruca® to the implementation of work systems that care for the environment is one of the main pillars that support the company, and proof of this is that it was the first Spanish footwear company certified by AENOR in the Carbon Footprint CO2 controlled in 2012 and that it has achieved the Full Carbon Footprint Cycle in successive years until today.
